Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Zimbabwe on Thursday for a two-day visit, having been invited by Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. Both leaders are known for their fierce opposition to the West.

Zimbabwean’s Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC Party has strongly criticized the visit.

“Hobnobbing with dubious political leaders confirms stereotypes that we are a banana republic,” said a party statement.

The MDC referred to Ahmadinejad as a “warmonger, a trampler of human rights, [and] an executioner,” the BBC reported.

On Friday, the Iranian leader will open a large trade exposition where Iran will be the biggest exhibitor. The CMD has said neither the prime minister nor any senior officials from their party will attend the ceremony.
