An armed man took five hostages on Wednesday at the Wytheville post office, located in a mountain town in western Virginia.

The man appeared to have five pounds of plastic explosives strapped to his chest, according to the Associated Press. Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller said it was unconfirmed whether the man had explosives.

Police were notified of the incident just after 2:30 p.m. Police, FBI, and explosives experts were on the scene, while negotiators tried to convince the unidentified man to release the hostages. As of press deadline, the incident was yet to be resolved.

No injuries were reported, although shots were fired earlier in the day.

The man was pushing a wheelchair when he entered the post office, according to a statement from the Virginia State Police. Food and drink were also delivered to the front door of the post office, which were requested by the suspect.
